The Hidden cost of poor communication

Every organization talks about the importance of communication, yet few truly understand the price they pay when communication breaks down.

According to recent research from Grammarly and The Harris Poll (2024), ineffective communication costs U.S. businesses an estimated $1.2 trillion each year in lost productivity, misunderstandings, and collaboration inefficiencies.

The real cost is much greater.

Personally, I conducted several fatality investigations where a breakdown in communication played a significant factor in the order of events that resulted in loss of life. 

Effective communication is not merely a leadership skill. It is a critical safety control.

High-Performing Teams Communicate with Intention 

The highest-performing teams don't assume communication will naturally improve. They are intentional about understanding how people prefer to communicate, setting clear expectations, confirming understanding, and creating an environment where employees feel comfortable asking questions and speaking up.

Here's a challenge for leaders this week:

Take 15 minutes to audit your team's communication.

Ask yourself:
 

• Where do misunderstandings occur most often?
 

• What work is regularly being redone because expectations weren't clear?
 

• Are people making assumptions instead of confirming understanding?
 

• Do employees feel comfortable speaking up when something isn't clear (e.g. use of stop work)?

Small improvements in communication can produce significant improvements in productivity, trust, teamwork, and safety.
