Building Resilient Teams in Challenging Times

Every team faces adversity. Priorities shift, pressure rises, and unexpected setbacks test how people work together. In those moments, the difference between average teams and resilient teams becomes clear.

Average teams may perform well when things are stable, but under stress, communication often breaks down. People avoid difficult conversations, protect themselves, or stay quiet when something needs to be said.

Resilient teams respond differently. Their strength is not created during a crisis. It is built over time through trust, honest feedback, and psychological safety.

Trust Is Built Before the Challenge

Teams that overcome adversity have usually spent years building the habits that matter most. They know how to speak honestly, challenge ideas respectfully, and address problems early. Because trust already exists, people do not waste energy wondering whether it is safe to speak up.

They know that feedback is not personal criticism. It is a shared commitment to getting better.

Honest Feedback Makes Teams Stronger

Average teams often confuse politeness with health. They avoid tension, but important issues remain hidden.

Resilient teams understand that honest feedback is essential. They are willing to say what is not working, ask hard questions, and surface risks before they become bigger problems. This helps them adapt faster, make better decisions, and learn from setbacks.

Psychological Safety Enables Courage

Psychological safety does not mean avoiding accountability or difficult conversations. It means people feel safe enough to speak honestly, admit mistakes, ask for help, and challenge assumptions without fear of blame or embarrassment.

In challenging times, teams need truth more than comfort. When people feel safe to share what they observe, organizations can respond with clarity instead of confusion.

This is especially important when it comes to workplace safety. Employees must feel empowered to speak up and stop work when conditions are unsafe, without fear of repercussions. A stop-work process is only effective if people genuinely believe they can use it.

Unfortunately, I have witnessed firsthand the consequences when leaders reported to senior management that a robust stop-work culture existed when it did not. The gap between perception and reality had life-altering consequences. That experience reinforced a critical lesson: psychological safety is not a soft skill or a leadership buzzword. In high-risk environments, it can be the difference between preventing harm and allowing it to occur.

What Sets Resilient Teams Apart

The strongest teams are not those that avoid adversity. They are the ones that face it together.

They stay aligned around a shared purpose. They give each other the benefit of the doubt.

They protect trust while solving hard problems.

Average teams focus only on results. Resilient teams also pay attention to how they work together: whether they told the truth, listened well, raised concerns early, and learned from the experience.

Resilience is a long-term investment. It is built in daily conversations, honest feedback, shared accountability, and a culture where people feel safe enough to be candid.

That is what separates average teams from teams that can overcome adversity and grow stronger through it.
